Teachers College of Education, Chicago

8/6/2008

My mom, who died this past March at age 85, had attended this college just after she graduated high school.  Mom was from South Bend, not too far from Chicago.

A lady at St. Mary of the Woods in Avon, Ohio, where my sister Janet works, was talking about where she went to college.  Janet said Mom had gone there, too.  As it turns out, this lady and my mom were roommates in the 1940's.

Robots of the World

7/22/2008

Our first performance of the Robot Play, R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) was on this Friday night.  Erin and I have been rehearsing for a few weeks, and tonight's the big night.

I flick on the TV Friday morning, just to catch a few minutes news while I eat some breakfast.  It was on Channel 25 (WVIZ) from the night before, but this morning a kids' show is on, going over the letter 'O' sound.  In big yellow letters:  ROBOT, and some goofy guy acting like a robot.

Spread Your Wings

11/23/2007

Charlie, who is spending a lot of time on the computer lately playing RuneScape, said, “The computer downstairs is broken, what do I do now?”  I told him,”Go outside and play like other kids, spread your wings a little.”

I was on the upstairs computer, and about two minutes later I’m looking at a job description, it’s first line reads, “Working as a Systems Architect in the industry will give you the chance  to spread your creative wings

Tennis Leg

11/15/2007

Two weeks ago I injured my left calf playing tennis at River Oaks.  The injury is known as tennis leg.  A small tear in the muscle, about four inches below the knee on the backside of the leg, occurred when I pushed off of it at the baseline to go for a short ball near the net.  It bleeds internally and the blood gathers around the ankle and bottom of the foot, making it all black and blue.  Fortunately, it’s not as severe as an Achilles tendon tear, and it heals up in a few weeks.  But it does slow you down, forcing you to drag it up to the good leg and to limp along.

This morning going to work in downtown Cleveland, I park the car, begin walking the last two blocks, cross at the light, and turn up to walk up the other side of the street, and I’m four paces behind a woman who is also limping along with an injured left leg.  I started laughing to myself, imagining people driving by seeing everybody limping into town.  I was going to ask her how she hurt it but I could not catch up to her before she crossed the street.  I figured I would see her again and ask if it was tennis leg.

St. Louis

11/14/2007

I got an email from a recruiter in St. Louis about an Actuate job.

Later, walking past a bookstore during lunch, I stop to look at some drawings of baseball parks displayed in the storefront window.  Along with Cleveland and Detroit, there was one of St. Louis
